2024 - Anti Poaching, Lower Zambezi, Zambia - donation of USD 21,500
The SwissAfrican Foundation has closed funding gaps in the 2024 Law Enforcement Budget and helped to cover the costs of the communication center at the CLZ base camp and the salaries of the Wildlife Police Officers stationed in Kulefu.
DNPW / CLZ Control Room, USD 18,000
In the remote and difficult terrain of the Lower Zambezi National Park, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ) are faced with the problem of limited mobile phone coverage. To close this communication gap, CLZ relies on InReach devices and VHF radio communication. The InReach devices enable real-time data collection and increase the safety of rangers in the field. Efficient operations depend on direct communication between the control room and the remote operational bases of Kulefu and Chilapira. The control room is the communications center for processing this sensitive data and information to carry out all law enforcement projects.
Kulefu, USD 3,500
Kulefu is the base station of the law enforcement authorities in the Lower Zambezi National Park. The SwissAfrican Foundation finances part of the salaries of the wildlife police officers stationed in Kulefu. Kulefu is located in a particularly remote area of the park that is threatened by illegal activities. The support of the SwissAfrican Foundation in 2024 has thus helped to maintain the efficient operation of the Control Room and the Kulefu Operations Base by providing salaries, transportation and technical equipment.
Thanks to this essential work, the CLZ and DNPW were able to record the following remarkable successes in just one year: 63 suspects were arrested, 467 snares removed, 41 firearms and 1160 kg of bushmeat confiscated.

Conservation Lower Zambezi
Patrols in the Lower Zambezi conducted by Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ) and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) are focused in the Lower Zambezi National Park (4,092km2) and the Chiawa Game Management Area (2,344km2), with an increased presence in the Rufunsa Game Management Area (3,179km2).
Community Scouts (employed by CLZ) and Wildlife Police Officers (employed by DNPW) patrol the Park targeting hotspot areas prone to wildlife crime. Deployments are identified based on intelligence generated through collaboration with DNPW Intelligence Units and through extensive data records from CLZ’s 24/hour Control Centre. Patrols in the GMAs are also conducted to support the communities and safeguard their crops from wildlife, thus allowing their livelihoods and the wildlife to thrive.
CLZ have a technologically advanced monitoring and evaluation system (that is continually improving) which allows real-time tracking of all teams in the field. All deployments are equipped with navigational, solar and data recording equipment in order to streamline data collection and track successes in the field over the years.
