Covid-19 Support Lower Zambezi, Zambia
2020 - Anti Poaching, Lower Zambezi, Zambia - Donation of US$ 22,250We made this contribution to the Conservation Lower Zambezi as part of the Covid-19 support programme of the SwissAfrican Foundation. In 2020, Covid-19 stopped almost all operations in the park and funds to maintain the park and support the surrounding community were most welcomed.
With this amount two Community Scouts team and one DNWP Ranger team can patrol the park for 3 months. Included are food, equipment and salary for the Community Scouts. The DNWP Ranger salary is paid by the government.
A first payment of US$ 16,000 was done at the beginning of 2020. We were able to transfer an additional US$ 6,250 in July 2020 as part of our Covid-19 support program for Lower Zambezi NP. We would like to thank everyone who participated in our fundraising campaign!
In 2020, through funding from SwissAfrican Foundation, CLZ has been able to fill a critical gap within its Wildlife Protection Programme. 24 patrols were undertaken from June to September in the Lower Zambezi NP through SwissAfrican Foundation funding, which represents about 11% of the total anti poaching patrols of CLZ and DNPW.

Conservation Lower Zambezi
Patrols in the Lower Zambezi conducted by Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ) and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) are focused in the Lower Zambezi National Park (4,092km2) and the Chiawa Game Management Area (2,344km2), with an increased presence in the Rufunsa Game Management Area (3,179km2).
Community Scouts (employed by CLZ) and Wildlife Police Officers (employed by DNPW) patrol the Park targeting hotspot areas prone to wildlife crime. Deployments are identified based on intelligence generated through collaboration with DNPW Intelligence Units and through extensive data records from CLZ’s 24/hour Control Centre. Patrols in the GMAs are also conducted to support the communities and safeguard their crops from wildlife, thus allowing their livelihoods and the wildlife to thrive.
CLZ have a technologically advanced monitoring and evaluation system (that is continually improving) which allows real-time tracking of all teams in the field. All deployments are equipped with navigational, solar and data recording equipment in order to streamline data collection and track successes in the field over the years.
